Debra Reed Sews Us The Way Out Of This Mess!

A study showed that when one city banned single use plastic bags, patient visits to the emergency room for stomach ailments suddenly increased. An editorial commented, "They should make the bags out of hemp, because it naturally resists mold and bacteria." I decided at that moment, I was going to do it!

The trend to ban single use plastic bags is sweeping the country, as concern for the environment grows. Meanwhile, many people do not realize that bacteria lurks in their reusable shopping bags, and is capable of spreading disease.

I quickly learned that hemp was a super fabric. Hemp mostly grows organically. It naturally resists pests, requiring no pesticides. Remarkably, hemp grows 10 feet tall in 100 days, requiring no fertilizer. It crowds out weeds, needing no herbicides.

Bags made of hemp are biodegradable. Hemp can be bleached without chlorine, because hemp contains a low amount of lignin. In addition, hemp is sustainable. It grows rapidly without depleting the soil.

Highly absorbent, hemp resists mildew, rot and decay. Hemp is strong, resisting tears and abrasions. Hemp is durable, lasting longer than other fabrics. It blocks UV rays better than any other fabric. For those reasons, it is widely used for maritime rope.

Currently, hemp fabric is expensive in the United States, because it is illegal to grow it. Hemp is derived from cannabis sativa, a plant similar to marijuana, a controlled substance.

Momentum toward the legalization of industrial hemp farming is growing in the United States. Many states already passed laws allowing farmers to grow industrial hemp. Fortunately, this trend will increase supply of hemp fabric, and reduce prices over time. At herbsack, we aspire to make all our bags from 100% natural materials. Unfortunately, scarce supply of hemp fabric, high costs, and import logistics made it challenging.

In addition, the feedback from friends was that we need to offer multiple bags to satisfy a variety of tastes. Customers value each feature differently. Some prefer organic, while others prefer a bag they can throw in the wash each week that won't wrinkle in the dryer. One bag cannot do it all!

herbsack is a remarkable new line of attractive, rugged, shopping totes made from naturally biodegradable hemp, organic cotton, blends and specially selected polyesters.
